The most challenging essay
I can definitively say that essay #1 was the easiest essay for me so far, but it's harder for me to tell which of essays #2 and #3 have been harder for me to write. I think both of them posed the challenges of creating a strong analysis after writing about the description.Thinking back to the first essay, it was mostly description and less analysis, which was a lot easier for me, and I imagine for others too. I think the trouble I had with the graffiti essay was that for a long time I was at an impasse in coming up with any sort of analysis that wasn't surface level, and as a result soon tired of writing the essay, even after I did find some unexpected insight in the piece of art I was writing about. For essay #3 I think it would have been easier if I hadn't picked my three ads so quickly and frantically. When I wrote my proposal I still didn't really know what my thesis was going to be, and then, partly because of the election, I procrastinated on my first draft. I think that it wouldn't have seemed as hard had I spent more time on it. I hope that when I write my final draft I will not find it too particularly hard.

I agree with Nisha. Essay 1 was definitely the easiest essay to write because it was more of a creative assignment, more description based, and of course, shorter in length. I really like describing places, using vivid imagery and sensory details, so my words flowed pretty easily, making page length not an issue. On the other hand, I agree that Essays 2 and 3 have been more difficult because they are both more analysis driven works. It is harder to extract insight about art than about a place. Art is very mysterious and open-ended. It can project so many different meanings and messages, and it is up to the writer to discover what a specific piece of art means to them. Therefore, analyzing art requires many skills. One must deconstruct the make-up of the specific piece, extract what each aspect means, and then relate all of these ideas to a larger thesis. Of course, it is easier to analyze one piece of art as opposed to comparing three different pieces of art, making Essay 2 easier than Essay 3. However, it has been interesting for me to draw conclusions based on three images. It has created more of a challenge and has opened up my writing to more paths of insight.
ReplyDeleteNisha, I too wrote about how I find the third essay the most difficult. Choosing the right ads are very important, as they determine the quality of your paper. One thing I found hard to do was to narrow down what I wanted to take about in this paper, as several themes run through the ads and it is hard to condense it to a specific topic which I can write in depth about. Another trouble I'm having with this paper is finding appropriate sources to cite. Searching through masses amounts of information just to find something relevant is quite difficult. I'm probably finding it particularly difficult as in high school we didn't do research papers at all, our exams were timed and on the spot and the rest of our writing assignments for English were mostly creative in nature. The challenge this paper provides me will only improve my skills though, and it also makes the task more interesting for me. Research and proper citation of sources is an important component of college writing and this paper will serve as a stepping stone for me to transition on.
